Today marks the 58th anniversary for the National Day of Prayer. The holiday encourages individuals of every denomination and faith to pray for personal repentance and our nation. According to the website http://www.ndptf.org/about/index.cfm National Day of Prayer mobilizes the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of power: government, military, media, business, education, church and family.

At noon today, a variety of churches gathered at the Columbia courthouse to recognize this American holiday. Regardless of the denomination or religion, each person was connected in mind and spirit; they became on one-accord. Pastors and different church congregations gathered to pray for the country and the economic crisis we are facing.

According to Vicki Leuther, this year’s focus was on uniting each person as one, and praying for our nation, and its future. She and her husband, Pastor Tom Leuther, have been hosting and organizing the ceremony for eight years.

Although Vicki confesses that this year’s turn-out was less than usual, about 10 different Columbia pastors were in attendance.

Created in 1952 and proposed as a law by President Harry S. Truman, individuals celebrate this day every first Thursday of May. The online National Day of Prayer Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. Its purpose is to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer and to create appropriate materials.
