Amidst other events to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Roe V. Wade decision this week is a round table discussion at the Hillel Center today, Thursday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m. The event will highlight a unique element of the abortion debate. Most people fall into one of two categories: pro-choice or pro-life. However, some people are finding their identity in being both pro-choice and pro-faith.
There are three speakers slated to lead the discussion. The gathering will likely be small and quiet, meant to bring together people from as many beliefs and backgrounds as possible. The speakers will be presenting their experiences and thoughts on being pro-faith and how it has not greatly interfered with their lives and pro-choice beliefs, but instead enhanced them.
One of the speakers is Tatiana McKinney, a student and organizer for a local chapter of Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom. SYRF, a national organization, connects like-minded people of various religious beliefs in a common cause. “It’s hard to find a lot of people like you,” said McKinney in conjunction to being pro-choice and pro-faith. McKinney says this discussion will be unique and exciting amongst the other Roe V. Wade events of this week since it features a relatively new dialogue.
The other two speakers will also be telling their stories of being pro-faith and pro-choice.
I’m always very curious to see how the faithful defend the pro-choice position. I would be interested to hear your defense.
